How to calculate a weighted average
A weighted average gives each grade an importance proportional to its weight. Multiply each grade by its weight, add the results, then divide by the sum of the weights.
Example: 14/20 on a project worth 30% and 9/20 on an exam worth 70% gives (14 × 30 + 9 × 70) ÷ 100 = 10.5/20. A plain average would give 11.5/20, which overstates your real standing.
How to calculate the grade you need on your final exam
Use this formula: needed = (target − current grade × weight already graded) ÷ weight of the final. Weights are written as decimals, so 40% becomes 0.4.
If the result is above the maximum grade, the target is out of reach. If it is zero or below, you have already secured it. The table under the result shows the score you need for several targets at once.
Tips to raise your average before the final
Start with the assessments that carry the most weight: one point on an exam worth 60% is worth three times one point on a quiz worth 20%.
