How the TOEIC Listening & Reading test is scored
The TOEIC Listening & Reading test has 200 multiple-choice questions in two sections: Listening (100 questions, about 45 minutes) and Reading (100 questions, 75 minutes). Each section is scored from 5 to 495 in steps of 5, so the total goes from 10 to 990.
Your score is not simply your number of correct answers. ETS converts the raw score of each section into a scaled score with a table made for that specific test form, so that a 700 means the same level whatever the session. Those tables are not public. That is why any calculator, including this one, gives an estimate rather than your official score.
TOEIC scores and CEFR levels
ETS publishes the minimum section scores that match each level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). For B2, you need at least 400 in Listening and 385 in Reading. For C1, 490 in Listening and 455 in Reading. The table above lists every level.
Many programmes and companies ask for a total score, often 785 for a B2 requirement. Check the exact rule of your school or employer: some look at the total, others at each section.
Why the range matters more than one number
ETS reports a standard error of measurement of about 25 points per section. In practice, if you sat the real test twice with no extra study, your two scores could differ by that much. Looking at the range keeps you from celebrating, or worrying, over a difference that is only noise.
To track real progress, compare full practice tests a few weeks apart and look for changes of 40 points or more in a section.
